"Will County Coroner: Coroner Patrick O'Neil, a Democrat, has been taking heat for presiding over a 2004 coroner's jury that ruled as accidental the death of former Bolingbrook cop Drew Peterson's third wife, Kathleen Savio. O'Neil said in late 2007 that he disagreed with the finding of the inquest into that death. But he argued that under state law, coroners were not allowed to bypass the jury process. That sounds like a flimsy excuse. The coroner typically has a lot of power in steering the jury's results. If he had doubts, he could have pushed the issue with the state's attorney.
We endorse Republican Charles Lyons, a former deputy coroner. He has good ideas for reshaping the office, including creating a new "death review" team to evaluate questionable cases."
